NUST MISiS constructs a new generation Prototyping Center
NUST MISiS completed an engineering prototyping center named “Center for Industrial Prototyping of High Complexity”. The center will be put into operation in autumn 2016.
According to the founders, the center will become a modern multirole high-tech digital laboratory for development and industrial design of functional prototypes for national and global industries.
NUST MISiS expects a full cycle for development and design of innovative production to be organized at the center. With an area covering 3,500 square meters, the center has 29 units of state-of-the-art production equipment and machine-tools that can produce small batches of precision components and industrial prototypes of the highest quality that meet modern industrial design standards. The center’s high-tech equipment can calculate, develop, generate and build sophisticated functional digital outputs and systems for multiple sectors. The size of the output varies from one micron to 20 meters.
The prototyping center will be used in the aerospace industry, biological engineering, medicine, space exploration and defence technologies. Its experts have already completed a number of projects, including a new-generation prototype spacecraft for the Korolev Rocket and Space Corporation Energia and a new astronaut chair in cooperation with the Zvezda (Star) Production Association.
“A prototype is an object that is the first of its kind, as it has not existed before. When a new spacecraft, automobile or satellite is being developed, it is necessary to construct it for the first time. In Russia such work has always been carried out at each specific factory, but few of them can afford it now. Therefore, we decided to construct a multi-industrial facility where you can create almost any object that comes to mind. Our center will provide scientists with a kind of a “magic wand”. If anyone has a dream of creating anti-gravity and, for example, moving through time, then we can help them try to fulfill it. Perhaps the world has not seen such a center before”, said Vladimir Pirozhkov, the Center Director and the industrial designer who created the torch for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games.
Alevtina Chernikova, Rector of NUST MISiS, emphasized that it is very important to eliminate the gap between professional education and real-life manufacturing, so that graduates of technical universities have no problems with employment.
“Our master's programs that are based on a project-oriented approach allow students not only to implement their ideas and projects, but also get acquainted with the multi-industrial facility. There are no engineering centers in the world that have such a multi-industrial facility”, said Alevtina Chernikova.
The engineering center for prototyping of high complexity at NUST MISiS was established through the support of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science and Ministry of Industry and Trade.
